Functional Capacity Evaluations:
- Assess functional abilities for return to work
- For use as an objective, accurate tool for resolution of disability / worker's compensation cases
What is Functional Capacity Evaluation?
A Functional Capacity Evaluation, or FCE, was defined by Dr. Leonard Matheson as "a systematic process of measuring and developing an individual's capacity to dependably sustain performance in response to broadly defined work demands" (Matheson, 1986). Continuum Wellness Clinic's FCE's are performed by Erica Reali, PT. Erica has attended the Roy Matheson and Associates, or RMA program for work capacity evaluation. The RMA evaluation is an intensive, one-day evaluation that focuses on using functional baseline© and functional-repeat-testing© that includes activities similar to those that the participant performs in a typical workday.
The one-day format used by the RMA method enables evaluators to gather more information and thoroughly asses the patient's ability to do work activities that include prolonged sitting, standing, bending, overhead reaching and any other activities that a patient would perform under their job description during a normal workday.
Functional Capacity Evaluations include an intake conference, assessment of the physical demands of the work environment, functional testing to determine baseline measurements, initiation of a battery of testing, follow-up functional testing for comparison with baseline measurement and full report.
